Hello  everyone,  my  name  is  Irene  and  I’m  Zambian.  What  am  I  doing  to  reduce  poverty?  I’m  working  on  a  program  that  now  has  a  network  of  more  than  850  young  change  makers  in  their  communities.  My  program  works  with  these  young  people  in  a  range  of  different  ways.  We  offer  them  mentoring  support,  access  to  information  and  peer  to  peer  learning  opportunities.  I  believe  that  when  we  convice  a  young  person  to  believe  more  in  themselves  and  what  they  can  do  and  also  provide  the  right  kind  of  environment  for  this  young  person  to  achieve  their  dreams  and  ambitions,  even  on  the  smallest  scale,  we  create  hope  in  this  young  person  and  the  realisation  that  thay  do  even  bigger  things. 

I  believe  that  is  starts  with  that  one  hopeless  person  beliving  in  themselves  and  working  towards  achieving  what  they  set  as  their  priorities  and  if  we  can  start  from  giving  people  hope  and  making  sure  that  they  have  the  right  environment  in  which  to  explout  what  they  can  actually  do  with  this  hope,  then  we’re  on  the  right  track 

Hi,  My  Name  is  Patricia~  I  am  very  new  to  the  site  and  to  the  fight  against  poverty.  I  personally  have  experienced  poverty  in  that  I’ve  been  homeless.  Lack  of  employment  opportunites  led  me  to  this.  It  was  only  when  I  reached  out  to  my  community  that  I  began  to  get  myself  out  of  my  situation. 

Through  community  organizations,  I  was  able  to  find  work,  affordable  housing,  education  and  other  services  which  helped  get  me  to  where  I  am  today.  I  am  sooo  thankful  and  in  return  I  started  working  with  those  same  organizations  to  give  back.  It  was  during  the  years  1996-2000,  I  started  facilitating  workshops  to  families  affected  by  the  new  "Welfare  Law"  which  meant  ~~either  find  work  or  return  to  school  in  order  to  keep  their  benefits.  I  started  a  home  daycare  service  and  mentored  my  families. 

In  the  workshops  they  learned  how  to  make  short  and  long  term  goals,  identify  barriers  and  how  to  overcome  them.  I  think  one  way  to  help  end  poverty  is  through  education  and  resources.  As  I  read  the  information  about  Africa  and  their  struggles,  it  seems  the  best  way  to  help  is  through  education.  I  am  not  sure  what  I  can  do  from  here  but  is  willing  to  at  least  donate  to  help  provide  the  necessary  supplies  needed.  I  am  also  willing  to  donate  my  time  as  a  virtual  assistant  to  this  campaign.  If  this  is  an  area  in  which  I  can  be  utilized  please  let  me  know.  I  currently  work  2  home-based  jobs  and  spend  a  lot  of  time  online. 

I  spend  $8  each  day  on  expensive  coffees  and  have  made  a  decision  to  take  that  money  and  apply  it  to  a  much  needed  cause.  I  know  most  people  think  a  $10  donation  does  very  little  due  to  the  enormous  need,  but  every  little  bit  helps.  Over  time  our  donations  could  help  save  an  entire  family.  Today  is  the  first  day  of  the  rest  of  my  life  and  I  intend  to  do  what  I  can  to  help  save  a  life……my  life  was  saved  when  someone  reached  out  to  me.  Now  that  we  are  aware  of  the  situations  in  Africa,  how  can  we  ignore  it?

Hi,  My  name  is  Jean  B  Manirakiza.  I  was  born  and  raised  in  Burundi-just  a  bit  west  of  Mbola.  I  now  live  in  Washington  DC  area.  I  am  involved  with  many  organizations  dealing  with  Africa-Transafrica,  The  Friends  of  Congo  and  I  help  in  the  resettlement  of  African  refugees-especially  from  East  Africa-  in  the  DC  region. 
I  applaud  the  initiative  by  John  Legend  to  inspire  people  to  action.  Because  most  people  fall  into  the  cynical  trap,  when  you  meet  a  person  of  this  caliber  taking  steps  to  make  a  difference,  it  is  so  refreshing. 

Having  grown  up  in  the  same  conditions  as  the  people  in  Mbola,  I  can  appreciate  this  program’s  comprehensive  approach.  Unless  basic  needs  such  a  food,  health  care  and  education  are  taken  care  of,  it  will  be  an  illusion  to  see  Africa  move  forward.  All  we  need  is  real  leadership-people  with  a  vision,  otherwise,  I  don’t  even  understand  why  Africa,  the  potentially  richest  continent  is  so  much  associated  with  poverty.  Thanks  for  the  inspiration.  Blessings  to  all!

Hi,  My  name  is  Kago,  i’m  from  Botswana,  an  African  country  in  the  centre  of  Southern  Africa.  There  is  so  much  poverty  in  the  world  that  many  peolpe  especially  those  on  this  network  would  like  to  just  stop  it  at  a  finger  lift  but  its  not  so  possible.It  is  great  that  so  many  peolpe  are  making  donations  to  eliminate  poverty.  I  was  beginning  to  think  that  maybe  i’m  not  giving  enough  but  the  Higher  being  spoke  to  me.  I  am  catholic  and  we  usually  have  offerings  that  are  strictly  for  the  poor  and  disadvantaged  in  the  world,and  i  guess  i  joined  at  the  right  time-its  Lent,  a  period  of  alms  giving!  I  am  also  a  member  of  the  Leo  Club  International,a  youth  charity  organisation  that  seeks  to  help  the  lowly  of  our  society,  its  a  large  organisation  and  its  in  nearly  every  country  of  the  world-please  join  in  and  be  active  in  your  various  communities.  Someone  once  said  to  me,  there  is  no  greater  joy  than  in  helping  somebody  else  who  will  not  pay  you  back!  I  so  appreciate  that.  Keep  up  everyone  and  loiun  the  Leo  club  or  Lions  Club  for  those  above  28years.  Be  blessed  and  lets  make  this  a  better  world.

Hey,  my  name  is  Christian  and  I’m  16  years  old  and  I  am  from  New  Jersey.  In  my  community,  I  volunteer  at  Weisman  Children’s  Rehabiliation  Hospital  in  Marlton,  NJ.  While  I  am  mainly  focusing  on  helping  African  countries  tackle  poverty,  some  organizations  I  volunteer  for  also  benefit  countries  where  poverty  also  affects  their  less-privileged  communities.  I  advocate  frequently  for  UNICEF,  urging  politicians  to  recognize  the  genocides  in  Sudan,  Zimbabwae,  and  the  Democratic  Republic  of  Congo  the  way  a  geoncide  should  be  handled  under  international  law  and  to  also  send  aid  to  the  less  fortunate  civilians  of  these  countries.  I  am  participating  in  UNICEF’s  Tap  Project  this  year  in  NYC  to  raise  funds  for  countries  that  can’t  afford  water  supplies  or  clean  water.  During  the  summer,  I  am  going  to  Zambia  for  a  non-profit  called  African  Impact  for  2  weeks  to  help  the  community  and  coach  sports.  I  am  looking  to  get  involved  more  especially  with  your  organization  and  am  open  to  other  ideas.  I  think  it  would  be  a  great  idea  if  "Show  Me"  took  a  few  members  to  Mbola  to  see  what  is  really  going  on  first  hand.  Many  organizations  ask  members  to  fundraise  and  raise  their  voice  for  the  cause  and  while  many  members  do  so  they  never  get  to  actually  see  what  is  really  going  on  first  hand  and  an  opportunity  for  members  to  do  so  would  be  more  then  amazing.

Hello,  I  am  Phenice  and  I  am  from  the  US.  I  am  not  active  in  my  community  but  I  want  to  start  doing  something.  I  don’t  know  where  the  being.  I  would  love  to  travel  around  the  world  and  end  all  that  is  wrong  in  society  but  my  first  start  is  in  me,  and  in  my  new  home  town. 

My  town  is  historical  we  are  not  to  far  from  Rosewood  FL,  but  the  average  person  may  not  know  the  history  of  what  took  place.  I  recommend  anyone  who  is  curious  to  read  up  on  it.  There  is  a  lot  of  history  here  but  its  dying  out.  A  big  part  of  the  community  seems  like  they  have  lost  hope  for  any  or  something  better.  I  want  to  bring  hope  and  ambitions  back.  I  just  don’t  know  where  to  begin. 

So  if  you  have  any  suggestions  I  am  open  to  them.

Hi,  my  name  is  Jordan  and  I  am  from  the  Netherlands.  I  do  think  we  can  do  a  lot  to  make  things  better.  Anyways  it  does  not  seem  to  be  easy.  Clearly  this  is  illustrated  by  the  fact  that  there  are  so  many  challenges  ahead  of  us. 

I  do  read  a  lot  about  small  and  very  useful  initiatives.  These  will  certainly  help  and  contribute  to  the  common  goal  that  we  have.  It  is  about  sharing,  understanding  and  faith  in  others. 

During  the  last  couple  of  years  I  have  travelled  all  over  the  world.  I  have  seen  the  poorest  people  in  India  and  seen  mothers  sleeping  at  the  streets  of  Santiago  in  Chilli.  We  should  feel  some  kind  of  responsibility  for  these  people.  We  can  not  look  to  the  other  side  and  just  ignore  the  tragedy  that  is  happening  next  door. 

I  do  understand  as  well  the  financial  problems  that  we  currently  have  in  the  western  world.  It  is  not  easy  to  deal  with  these  difficult  and  unpredictable  circumstances.  But  I  am  sure  it  is  not  the  money  that  will  do  the  job  alone.  It  is  the  attention,  the  love  and  the  way  we  deal  with  others.  We  have  to  focus  on  listening  and  try  to  find  what  we  can  improve! 

At  the  start  of  next  year  I  travel  again  to  Asia.  I  will  try  to  make  an  impression  of  what  I  see  and  what  happens  in  some  of  the  poorest  places  of  to  world.  I  will  update  these  pictures  on  the  site.  From  my  part  they  can  be  used  for  whatever  it  is  needed.  I  uploaded  already  one  picture  that  I  took  in  India.  I  hope  it  will  help  at  least  a  bit!

I  contribute  to  local  food  banks.  I  am  the  director  of  an  elementary  school  dance  team  and  we  do  food  drives  at  our  school.  I  also  contribute  to  the  Yele’  Haiti  organization.  This  summer  I  plan  on  teaching  in  Afrifa  or  Haiti  instead  of  teaching  summer  school  in  the  united  States.

I  donate,  when  I  can,  to  the  Show  Me  Campaign  and  others.  One  that  I  especially  like  to  give  to  is  The  Smile  Train.  A  few  monthly  donations  can  actually  pay  for  a  cleft  palate  surgery  for  a  child  who  would  otherwise  be  disfigured  for  life.  This  organization  sends  doctors  to  poor  nations  to  perform  free  surgeries  for  adults  and  children  who  otherwise  would  live  a  life  of  disfigurement  and  ridicule. 
In  education,  I  have  asked  the  teachers  I  supervise  to  read  The  End  of  Poverty.  We  are  also  requesting  that  the  high  school  seniors  in  our  general  English  12  classes  read  it  for  the  summer  so  that  we  can  start  a  conversation  with  them  about  ways  to  be  more  responsible  as  Americans  for  our  impact  on  the  global  environment  and  our  role  in  allowing  extreme  poverty  to  continue  to  exist.  Our  question  for  teens  is,  "What  can  you  do  now  to  make  a  difference?"

I’d,  Have  to  say  timing  has  played  a  dramatic  role  in  the  choices  I’ve  made  as  that  religion  is  the  driving  force  behind  my  love  in  our  spread  of  a  social  society.  One  of  great  magnitude  for  sin  and  the  believer.  It  gives  me  even  greater  honor  to  support  activities  that  are  God  inspired.  As  the  secret  things  of  the  heart  make  better  for  a  strong  mind  as  need  in  services  of  all  things.  It  is  not  my  place  to  identify  with  anyone  else  it  is  my  place  to  make  sure  that  the  authorities  already  set  in  place  will  sustain  the  fullest  of  prophecy.

I  am  contributing  frequently  to  a  local  food  bank  and  church  that  seek  to  eradicate  homelessness,  hunger,  and  HIV/AIDS
